Family is the backbone of life.
No matter if the family you count on for support and care consists of blood relatives, a group of friends or even just co-workers that you care about and that care about you; family is what makes our world spin and gives us meaning.
Being a grandfather now, I get to enjoy the multi-level view of just how important family is. I didn’t always value family so much. As teenager, family was the last thing that I cared about. I feel badly about that now, and the familial bridges that no longer exist have created a void in my life. I am so thankful for my wife for throwing the symbolic cold water in my face to bring my head out of that dark cloud of those days of the past.
It is such a joy to now see how wonderful our kids are and how they are kind and giving, and changing the world for the better. We now have two grandkids to love and watch grow into amazing humans. Smiles and laughter, learning and growing, hugs and kisses, and tears and crying continue to remind me that the loved ones in my life make my life what it is.
It's fun to look back at photos from last week, last year or last decade to remember how things have changed; how the kids and grandkids have grown.
Thank goodness for digital cameras and online services like Google Photos to automatically back up the photos I take on my phone, so they don’t get lost or damaged and I can easily recall them at a moment’s notice.
If you are in the Sioux Falls, SD metro area, I would love to help you create photographic memories by capturing today so you can reminisce tomorrow.
Let’s get together for a family photo shoot!
Easter has come and gone for another year. I hope you all had a wonderful weekend celebrating the resurrection of our savior with loved ones.
I thoroughly enjoyed the short time spent with our kids, grandkids and extended family. But, there is more to this Easter for me than the obvious. This Easter signified a new beginning of sorts for me.
I have vowed a renewal of life, a re-found passion and the rejuvenated focus on being a better person.
So often i write songs of faith and inspiration, yet i don't take my own advice in the lyrics. Now is the time to change all of that!
As the song above suggests, we all need to be better at surrendering our lives to God, trusting in his mercy and unending love. "I Surrender" is often my go-to song for grounding myself.
There is no better time than now to make a change in your life. For more inspiration, listen to my song "No Better Time" at http://noisetrade.com/justinehrman/turn
"I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.
Have a great day!
2016 was not a great year. Several personal issues that had been building for years finally came to a head during that year. I am typically a person that looks to the future, always moving forward.
As I get older, I am finding myself looking back more; reliving the many years of hundreds of good memories. Recently a young neighbor who follows me on Instagram requested that I record the song that I wrote for our son's baptism and sang for his. At long last (20 years later) I finally was able to record the song.
Child of God reminds me that no matter what life brings us, we are still a child of God. We are never alone. We are a blessing and we need to remember that. We matter to someone.
The photo I took for the song was taken in the St. Paul, MN area during a recent visit. Waterfalls, rivers, showers all remind me of the Grace of God flowing, forgiving. No matter the sin, if we ask for forgiveness to God, we will be washed clean because of Jesus' death on the cross.
2017 is going to be a great year! I have a friend in Jesus. I have been forgiven of all the stupidity that I've brought to this world. I am loved. I love others. The Holy Spirit is moving through me, calling me to make change in my life.
New year...new beginning...
I have to apologize for being so bad about updating this blog. I will try to be better!
My motto for today and well, everyday it seems, is "Don't Give Up." I have to admit that it's not always easy, but God gives us a new opportunity every day: a new opportunity to live well, love well and be well.
Life will continue dishing us junk but we have a choice: give up or get down and work. God doesn't promise an easy life. We are pretty guaranteed that life can be more bad than good...unless we ignore the bad the best we can and deliberately find the good in every day.
I could probably find hundreds, if not thousands of quotes about positive thinking, but I really like this one by Helen Keller.
Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see a shadow.

Find the light and keep facing it. Life will only be as good as you make it.
I'm not much for words usually, but I do like to write when I have time which doesn't happen that often. So, here I am trying to start my blogging so this page doesn't stay blank...
The word for today is "perseverance." It has been a long, hard life in many ways. I can be thankful for so much, however. I know that things could be so much worse and are for many people in this world.
I think about all of the failures, obstacles, hard-times and pain that I have endured in my life and I question why I haven't quit. The only thing I can say is hope. I can't help but have hope for the future. If I lose hope, then all is lost. My faith in Christ brings me to an everlasting hope that all will be ok.
God doesn't promise us that our journey will be easy or that our faith won't be tested. Life is the good and bad, the highs and lows. All we can do is surrender it all to God and have hope in knowing that our faith in God's promise of salvation will carry us to that day of Grace.
Hebrews 12:1-2 New International Version (NIV)12 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Part of living is the struggle. It gives me something to do, something to strive for. If I fail, I keep trying.
Keep your chin up. Know that God loves you and so do many others. Just surrender your cares to Christ and let love show the way.
Here is my lyric video for I Surrender. Enjoy and keep going! My Raining Grace site address is now closed, but you can purchase the song and all my music from my store!
